The Remote Detection of Staring

چکیده
Each author recently attempted to replicate studies in which participants were asked to psychically detect an unseen gaze. RW’s studies failed to find any significant effects whilst MS’s study obtained positive findings. The authors then agreed to carry out the joint study described in this paper, in the hope of determining why they had originally obtained such different results. This joint study involved both MS and RW carrying out separate experiments, but running them in the same location, using the same equipment/procedures and drawing participants from the same subject pool. The studies involved placing experimenter and participant in separate rooms linked by a one way closed circuit television system. This allowed the experimenter to see the participant, but not vice versa. The experimental sessions were divided into two sets of randomly ordered trials. During ‘stare’ trials the experimenter directed his/her attention towards the participant; during ‘non-stare’ trials the experimenter directed this attention away from the participant. The participants' electrodermal activity (EDA) was continuously recorded throughout each session. Results revealed that the EDA of RW’s participants was not significantly different during ‘stare’ and ‘non-stare’ trials. In contrast, the EDA iThe authors would like to thank the following organisations for supporting the research described in this paper; The Perrott-Warrick Fund, Institute for Noetic Sciences, UltraMind Ltd and the University of Hertfordshire. We are also grateful to Matthew Smith and Emma Greening for their help in running this experiment and analysing the data.

متن کاملDetection of Land Use Changes for Thirty Years Using Remote Sensing and GIS (Case Study: Ardestan Area)
Due to the increase of changes in the land uses mainly resulting from humaninterferences, monitoring the changes and evaluating their trend and environmental effectsfor future planning and management are essential. In the present study, an attempt is madeto observe the changes which had occurred in Ardestan area during a period of 30 yearsusing some satellite images. Different kinds of data for...
متن کاملLow Cost UAV-based Remote Sensing for Autonomous Wildlife Monitoring
In recent years, developments in unmanned aerial vehicles, lightweight on-board computers, and low-cost thermal imaging sensors offer a new opportunity for wildlife monitoring. In contrast with traditional methods now surveying endangered species to obtain population and location has become more cost-effective and least time-consuming. In this paper, a low-cost UAV-based remote sensing platform...
متن کاملLand cover land use mapping and change detection analysis using geographic information system and remote sensing
Land cover/land use categories are relevant components in land management. Understanding how land cover/land use change over time is necessary to assess the consequences of humans and natural stressors on the earth’s environment and resources. The aim of the study was to map and monitor the spatial and temporal change in land cover/land use for the periods of 1977, 1991 and 2016 and to predict ...
متن کاملCombining of Magnitude and Direction of Change Indices to Unsupervised Change Detection in Multitemporal Multispectral Remote Sensing Images
In remote sensing, image-based change detection techniques, analyze two images acquired over the same area at different times t1 and t2 to identify the changes occurred on the Earth's surface. Change detection approaches are mainly categorized as supervised and unsupervised. Generating the change index is a key step for change detection in multi-temporal remote sensing images. Unsupervised chan...
متن کاملIntroducing An Efficient Set of High Spatial Resolution Images of Urban Areas to Evaluate Building Detection Algorithms
The present work aims to introduce an efficient set of high spatial resolution (HSR) images in order to more fairly evaluate building detection algorithms. The introduced images are chosen from two recent HSR sensors (QuickBird and GeoEye-1) and based on several challenges of urban areas encountered in building detection such as diversity in building density, building dissociation, building sha...
